Machine Foundation Construction: How to Get It Right First Time

When a machine does not fit its foundation, the job stops while concrete is broken and redone. Almost every case comes from a few avoidable mistakes. Here is what to check before, during and after the pour.

Quick answer

To get a machine foundation right first time, build it to the final vendor drawing, cross-check civil, steel and equipment drawings, set anchor bolts with templates and record their positions, use the right concrete with proper compaction and curing, and grout only after the equipment is aligned. One team for foundation and erection avoids disputes.

1. Use the final vendor drawing

Foundations must be built to the final, approved drawing from the equipment vendor, not a preliminary one. Confirm the revision before work starts.

2. Check civil, steel and equipment drawings together

Bolt positions, pockets, levels and connected structures should be cross-checked before the pour.

3. Set anchor bolts with templates

Templates hold bolts in exact position and projection during concreting. Record co-ordinates and levels before and after the pour.

4. Concrete, compaction and curing

The right mix, proper compaction and enough curing time give the strength the machine needs, especially for vibrating equipment.

5. Align, then grout

Equipment is set, levelled and aligned, then grouted. Grouting before alignment is final causes problems.

6. One team from foundation to erection

When the same team builds the foundation and erects the equipment, there is no argument about whose mistake it is.
